How to edit a PDF online

  1. Drop your PDF. Every page appears, ready to edit.
  2. Pick a tool: "Edit text" to change words already on the page (scans too), "Add text" to add new words, or draw, highlight, whiteout, shapes, arrows and pictures.
  3. Click or drag on the page. Drag things to move them, drag the corner dots to resize, and change colour and size in the bar above.
  4. Click Save edited PDF and download. Undo any step with Ctrl or Cmd + Z.

Questions

Can I change text that is already in the PDF?

Yes. Choose "Edit text" and click a line of text. PDFboat covers the old line and puts the same words in a box you can retype, with the size, font style and colour matched as closely as it can. Layout around it does not move, so keep the new text about as long as the old one.

Can I edit a scanned PDF or a photo of a page?

Yes, in a different way. A scan is only a picture, so PDFboat first has to read it. Choose "Edit text" and click "Find the text (OCR)" on the page. The reader runs inside your browser, using files from this site, so your page is not uploaded. Then click a line, fix the words and save. Check the words before you save: a scan is read by a computer and can be wrong, and the new text uses a standard font, not the font in the picture.

Is the old text really gone?

No. "Edit text" and "Whiteout" cover the old words with a patch, and the original text stays inside the file underneath, where a person with the right tools could still find it. Do not rely on them to hide secrets like an ID number.

Can I add my signature?

Yes. Use the Sign PDF tool for a signature, initials and the date, or add a picture of your signature here with the Image tool.

What fonts can I use?

Sans, serif and mono, with bold and italic. They are the standard PDF fonts, so they look the same everywhere. Text in other scripts, like Hindi or Chinese, is added as a picture of the text so it still shows correctly.

How do I highlight text?

Choose Highlight and drag a box over the words. The colour lets the text show through, like a real highlighter.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. Press Ctrl or Cmd + Z, or use the undo button. Nothing is final until you click Save edited PDF, and your original file is never changed.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and edited inside your browser tab.

Can I password-protect the edited file?

Yes. Switch on "Password-protect" and the result is encrypted with AES-256. It is off by default.
