How to remove hidden metadata from a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF. PDFboat lists the hidden details it found.
  2. Untick anything you want to keep, then click Remove.
  3. Download the clean copy. The pages look exactly the same.

Questions

What is metadata?

Information stored in the file but not shown on the pages: the title, author, subject, keywords, the program that created it, creation and edit dates, and extra data blocks added by tools like Word or Photoshop.

What about photo location data?

Pictures in a PDF can still carry EXIF details such as the camera and GPS position. PDFboat removes that from JPEG pictures too, without re-compressing them.

Will the PDF look different?

No. Only the hidden details are removed. Pages, text, images, links and bookmarks stay as they are.

Is this enough to make a document anonymous?

It removes the file-level details. Names written inside the text, comments and form fields are content, not metadata, so check those yourself.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and cleaned inside this tab.

Can I password-protect the result?

Yes. Switch on "Password-protect" and the result is encrypted with AES-256. It is off by default.
